22 April 2019 – A record number of tourists have enjoyed the Easter holiday break in Croatia this year.

Over 143,000 tourists have enjoyed the Easter holiday in Croatia, beating the 2016 record when around 120,000 tourists visited. Excluding data from Easter Monday, tourists in Croatia recorded 449,000 overnight stays, 50 thousand more than last year, RTL reported.

Dubrovnik, where football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo decided to spend Easter with his fiancé and friends, was the busiest destination in Croatia with 40,789 overnight stays recorded during the Easter break.

Poreč was the next most popular spot with 28,561 overnight stays, followed by Rovinj (26,839), Zagreb (20,792), and Split (17,785).

The Germans led the way, creating almost 95,000 overnight stays over Easter, followed by Croatians (52,731), Italians (46,404), Austrians (42,036) and Slovenians (29,499).

Tourism Minister Gari Cappelli told RTL that Croatia could not have asked for better promotion over Easter than Ronaldo’s arrival.

“We could not have asked for better (advertisement) when he is followed by over 162 million people on Instagram. When a guy who has no problem choosing where to go decided to visit Croatia and Dubrovnik, and not just for a few hours but for a few days, then Croatia definitely has its own quality which the Easter numbers also confirm,” he said.

Cappelli said it has been a great pre-season for tourism so far but it is difficult to compare this Easter with last year as Easter fell later this year.

A record 19.7 million tourists visited Croatia in 2018.
