ZAGREB, 27 May 2025 – After more than a decade of promises, one of Zagreb’s key infrastructure projects is finally becoming a reality.
The city’s mayor, Tomislav Tomašević, alongside deputy mayors Danijela Dolenec and Luka Korlaet, visited the construction site on Monday to review progress on the reconstruction and expansion of Sarajevska cesta and the addition of a new tram line.
By the end of this year, Sarajevska cesta is expected to become the new southern road gateway into Zagreb.
Not long after, the city anticipates completing its first tram network expansion in 25 years.

The project will provide approximately 35,000 residents from the neighbourhoods of Travno, Utrina, Dugava, Hrelić, and Jakuševec with tram access for the first time.

Comprehensive Road and Tramway Upgrade
The project includes the expansion of Sarajevska cesta into a full-profile road, featuring three traffic lanes in each direction, pedestrian and cycling paths on both sides, and noise protection measures. The goal is to improve both safety and traffic flow for all road users.
The works encompass the construction of 1.8 kilometres of new road and 2.25 kilometres of tramway track.

The tram extension will include eight new tram stops and a turning loop, significantly improving public transport connectivity in the area.
Project Value and Funding
Valued at €25 million (excluding VAT), the project is currently being financed by the City of Zagreb, with co-financing expected through EU funds in cooperation with the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure.

Works Completed So Far
To date, substantial groundwork has been completed. On the road section, drainage channels, a water supply system and a heating pipeline have been installed.
A total of 200 foundation piles for noise barriers and 45 retaining walls have been constructed. Excavation of the eastern carriageway is complete, along with 350 metres of drainage and 205 metres of sewer connections.

An additional 1,000 metres of digital communication infrastructure has also been laid.
For the tram line, works between Zapruđe and Ukrajinska Street have included excavation and material replacement for the lower tram track structure.
Drainage has been installed on both sides, and 16 foundations for overhead lighting poles have been placed between the tracks.
Cables for street lighting and the overhead contact system have been laid, and work has commenced on building the upper tram track structure.
