Osijek, 23 January 2025 – The Croatian city of Osijek is set to usher in a new era of public transport as the city prepares to receive its first low-floor tram from KONČAR – Electric Vehicles this March.
The project, valued at €25 million and financed through the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, includes a total of 10 trams, with the remaining nine set to arrive throughout 2025.
Mayor Ivan Radić visited the KONČAR production facility in Zagreb this week and expressed satisfaction with the progress.

“We’re delighted that production is on schedule. The first tram will hit Osijek’s streets in March, and the rest will follow during 2025. These new trams are safer, more comfortable, and modern. At six metres longer than the current ones, they are also designed to accommodate individuals with disabilities,” Radić said.
The mayor also announced plans to expand the fleet, aiming to add an additional 10 low-floor trams.
This would bring the total to 20, significantly enhancing Osijek’s public transport system, which has not seen a new tram since 1982.

Modern Infrastructure to Support New Trams
Alongside the new trams, Osijek is modernising its tram infrastructure. The €45 million project includes upgrades to 10 kilometres of tram tracks and 23 stations, with 90% of the work already completed.
Radić highlighted the broader improvements to public transport, including the addition of 13 new buses and plans for 17 electric buses.

Innovative Features of the New Trams
Gordan Kolak, President of KONČAR, shared details about the trams, which are 20.8 metres long and equipped with energy storage systems for autonomous operation in case of network issues.
“The first tram will be fully assembled by late February and delivered to Osijek for final testing on the city’s modernised infrastructure in early March. The remaining nine trams will be delivered by September,” Kolak explained.
Driver and technical staff training will also commence soon to ensure a smooth integration of the new trams into Osijek’s transport system.

A Milestone for Osijek’s Public Transport
Mayor Radić concluded by emphasising the significance of this development for the city.
“This isn’t just a new vehicle; it marks a new chapter for Osijek’s public transport. As the city of Croatia’s first tram, we’re proud to lead again. The modern, larger, and more accessible trams will also help reduce the number of cars on our streets,” he said.
