The Neretva River mouth was recently transformed into a canvas of stunning sand art as artists gathered for the 4th Sand Art Neretva Festival in Opuzen.
This annual event invites creatives to craft beautiful works in the sand, drawing visitors and art lovers alike to witness this unique form of land art.
Sand art involves creating intricate patterns and shapes in the sand using simple tools like rakes or sticks. Artists also sculpt sand into stunning creations, merging artistic expression with the natural environment.
Many refer to the festival’s sand drawings as the Neretva’s own “crop circles”.
The festival, which started a few years ago as part of the Zen Opuzen Art Festival, has now grown into its own separate event, held each year at the end of summer.
Despite facing challenges this year, such as high tides and heavy rain on Saturday, which destroyed the earlier works, the festival continued thanks to the enthusiasm of the artists and support from local organisations.
The Ploče Tourist Board, Croatian Tourist Board, and the Dubrovnik-Neretva County Tourist Board all played key roles in ensuring the event’s success.
This creative celebration of art and nature continues to captivate visitors, leaving behind beautiful and fleeting works of sand art at the Neretva River mouth.
