A futuristic solution to the problem of effectively connecting downtown Zagreb to the new part of the city has been put forward by architect Ivica Plavec…

Plavec, an assistant professor at the Zagreb Faculty of Architecture, has designed a glass tube, which will link downtown Zagreb with New Zagreb (Novi Zagreb) over the river.

“One of the sensitive topics at the moment in the city of Zagreb is quality space, traffic and the cultural connection of downtown Zagreb and New Zagreb. The two parts of the city are badly connected for transport links, of course this project will not resolve that, but it will improve the situation,” Plavec said to daily Jutarnji list.

Fast-moving tracks will help get walkers to town quicker

The glass tube, erected 5-metres above the traffic, will have fast and slow-moving tracks just like at airports which will help pedestrians get faster to town. The tube, which will also act as an exhibition space inside, will also have a special track for cyclists.

Plavec says that the tube will cost around 40 million euros, and that the majority of the funds should come from European funds. For the moment though the project has only been put out there for the public to debate.
