Partial solar eclipse over Croatia tonight: Where and when to watch

People across Croatia will have the chance to witness a partial solar eclipse on Wednesday evening, with the event expected to be particularly striking in western parts of the country.

The eclipse will begin between 19:25 and 19:30, depending on location, shortly before sunset. Observers will need a completely unobstructed view towards the west or north-west, ideally from elevated ground, according to Zagreb Observatory.

The extent of the eclipse will vary significantly across Croatia. In Rijeka, 85.05% of the Sun’s diameter will be obscured, while Pula will see 86.30% and Poreč as much as 89.44%. In Zagreb, the maximum visible obstruction will be 77%.

Elsewhere, the obstruction will reach 71.83% in Gospić, 70.76% in Bjelovar, 60.62% in Knin, 54.27% in Split, 52.70% in Osijek, 51.62% in Omiš and 34.05% in Dubrovnik.

The Sun will set between approximately 19:53 and 20:17, meaning Croatia will only see the first part of the eclipse. The maximum phase will occur after sunset.

Zagreb Observatory has stressed that the Sun must never be viewed directly with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope without appropriate solar filters. Only certified solar-viewing glasses or filters should be used, as improper observation can cause permanent eye damage.

The observatory will also host a special programme marking the event.

Meanwhile, the Perseid meteor shower will provide another astronomical spectacle. The Croatian Astronomical Society forecasts around 100 meteors per hour, with the best viewing conditions expected from midnight until dawn. No special equipment is needed; observers are advised to find a location away from artificial light and allow their eyes at least 30 minutes to adjust to darkness.

The next partial solar eclipse visible from Croatia will occur on 2 August 2027, while the next total solar eclipse visible from the country is not expected until 3 September 2081.
