A delightful new addition has arrived in Tuhelj in Hrvatsko Zagorje – the Park of Traditional Toys, offering fun and nostalgia for both children and adults alike.

This colourful space invites visitors to relax, tap into their inner child, and enjoy the charm of traditional wooden toys that hold deep cultural meaning.

These iconic wooden toys are a cherished symbol of the Hrvatsko Zagorje region, with a history stretching back to the 19th century.

The craft has been passed down through generations in local families, with a unique tradition: men typically carve the toys by hand, while women paint them with care and vibrant colours.

The craftsmanship is so culturally significant that it has earned a place on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage, as well as Croatia’s own Register of Protected Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Now, with the opening of this park, visitors can see these treasured toys in a new light. Among the installations are wooden horses with carts, trains, airplanes, and even the famous licitar heart.

There’s also a special puzzle featuring symbols and the logo of the Zagorje Tourist Board, adding a modern, playful twist for children to enjoy.

The Mayor of Tuhlje, Mladen Hercigonja, and the Director of the Biser Zagorja Tourist Board, Tatjana Petranović Capar, were in attendance this week at the park’s opening.

“This is a way for children to connect with our traditions and culture,” organisers say.

Just a few decades ago, toys like these could be found in every Croatian home. Today, mass-produced toys from abroad dominate the market. But there’s no reason for that to be the case.

Parents, grandparents, and carers are being encouraged to choose traditional toys and keep this beautiful craft alive.
