OSIJEK, 3 March 2026 – A major step has been taken towards the construction of a new Clinical Hospital Centre in Osijek, one of the largest and most valuable healthcare investments in Croatia.
A contract transferring 120,000 square metres of state-owned land to Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek was signed on Monday, formally enabling the development of the new hospital complex.
The agreement was signed by Branko Bačić, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Physical Planning, Construction and State Assets, and hospital director Krunoslav Šego.
The signing took place in the presence of Osijek mayor Ivan Radić and Osijek-Baranja County prefect Nataša Tramišak.
With the signing of the agreement, the hospital officially became the owner of the land on Treće gardijske brigade Kune Street, where the new medical complex will be built.

Land worth €12 million
The land transferred to the hospital is valued at more than €12 million. The total value of the project to build the new Clinical Hospital Centre is estimated to exceed €800 million.
The future hospital complex is planned to cover approximately 215,000 square metres, making it one of the largest healthcare facilities in the country.
Mayor Radić said the project represents a long-awaited milestone for the city and its residents.

“Today we are one step closer to achieving a long-standing dream of many people in Osijek. The new hospital will shape the quality of life in our city for decades,” Radić said.
He noted that the planned hospital complex will span an area comparable to the historic Tvrđa or around 30 football pitches.

Radić also highlighted that the Croatian government has included the project among its strategic priorities and thanked Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and Minister Bačić for their support.
Healthcare hub for one million people
Once completed, the new hospital is expected to position Osijek as a major centre for healthcare and scientific excellence in eastern Croatia.
According to Radić, the facility will serve around one million people who gravitate towards the region, while also providing improved working conditions for doctors and medical staff.
Minister Bačić stressed that the significance of the project goes far beyond the value of the donated land.
“The land itself is worth just over €12 million, but the importance of this project is far greater. The new Clinical Hospital Centre will provide a strong boost to economic development in Osijek and the wider Slavonia region while raising healthcare standards to those of the 21st century,” Bačić said.

He added that the building permit became legally valid in mid-January, meaning the ministry has completed its role in the initial phase of the project.
The next steps include finalising the financing model and launching the public procurement process.
Strategic regional investment
Osijek-Baranja County prefect Tramišak described the hospital project as one of the two largest strategic developments in the county, alongside the planned Orlovnjak Regional Waste Management Centre.
Together, the two projects are valued at around €1 billion.
Tramišak noted that preparations for the new hospital began as early as 2017, when initial discussions and documentation work started.
Hospital director Šego said the development marks a historic moment for the institution and the wider region.
“Our hospital has been at its current location for 150 years, and that location has reached its limits. Modern medicine cannot advance in buildings that old,” Šego said.

“This is not a matter of megalomania, it is a necessity for our citizens.”
Once built, the new Clinical Hospital Centre is expected to significantly modernise healthcare services across eastern Croatia and strengthen Osijek’s role as a regional medical hub.
