€25 million Osijek–Koška railway upgrade on track for completion

Construction on the €25 million reconstruction of the Osijek–Koška railway line is progressing according to schedule, with completion expected by 30 June 2027, officials said during a site visit on Thursday.
The project forms part of the regional railway connection linking Osijek with Zagreb and is one of a series of transport infrastructure investments currently under way in eastern Croatia.
The construction site was visited by Osijek Deputy Mayor Dragan Vulin, State Secretary at the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Žarko Tušek, Osijek-Baranja County Prefect Nataša Tramišak, along with representatives of HŽ Infrastructure, contractors and local authorities.
The reconstruction covers just over 32 kilometres of railway and has been divided into three sections. The first section, between Osijek and Josipovac, has already been completed. Work on the second section between Josipovac and Bizovac is expected to finish by the end of July or during August, after which construction will begin on the final 13-kilometre stretch from Bizovac to Koška.

The project includes a complete renewal of the existing railway infrastructure, including the replacement of rails, sleepers, ballast and level crossings. Once completed, trains will operate at speeds of up to 100 km/h, the standard for regional railway lines.
Officials said the Osijek–Koška project is part of the wider modernisation of Croatia’s largest regional railway route connecting Varaždin, Osijek and Dalj. According to the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, investment across this route, including works on the Koprivnica–Varaždin section, totals almost €230 million.

The ministry also noted that railway projects worth around €1.7 billion are currently under way across Croatia. A contract for the reconstruction of the Dugo Selo–Novska section, valued at almost €700 million, is expected to be signed soon as the first phase of the modernisation of the RH1 international railway corridor.
Regional officials said continued investment in railway infrastructure is expected to improve transport links between eastern Croatia and the rest of the country while supporting economic development and regional connectivity.
