ZAGREB, 14 September 2026 – A new electro-diesel passenger train will enter service on the Split–Zagreb route tomorrow, bringing a range of new facilities for passengers travelling between Croatia’s two largest cities.

Operated by HŽ Passenger Transport (HŽPP), the new train is scheduled to make its first departure from Split at 7.54am on Tuesday.

The train has 150 seats and is equipped with free Wi-Fi and power sockets at passengers’ seats. It also features a modern passenger information system providing visual and audio announcements.

A dedicated area for bicycles is available on board, while accessibility features include ramps for passengers with disabilities.

Another new feature is the introduction of self-service vending machines. Passengers will be able to purchase coffee and other hot drinks, as well as water, soft drinks, sweets and snacks during the journey.

Designed for the Zagreb–Split railway

The electro-diesel train has been specifically designed for the railway line between Zagreb and Split, which is only partially electrified.

Its combined propulsion system allows it to operate on both electrified and non-electrified sections of the route, making it suitable for the existing infrastructure.

HŽPP said the introduction of the new trains is part of the company’s ongoing fleet modernisation programme and is expected to reduce energy consumption, noise and greenhouse gas emissions.

Experts from the KONČAR Group and a number of Croatian companies were involved in the development and production of the trains.

Six new trains by the end of 2026

The project includes the procurement of six new electro-diesel trains, financed through a €57.3 million loan from the European Investment Bank.

All six trains are expected to be introduced into service by the end of 2026.

Further changes to the Zagreb–Split service are planned from December, when the new timetable is due to come into effect.

Under the planned timetable, four daily trains will connect Zagreb and Split, increasing the number of regular connections between the two cities.
