Zagreb will soon welcome brand-new trams as part of the city’s public transport system.

The latest model, TMK 2400, is being produced by Croatian manufacturer Končar, marking a significant upgrade to the fleet.

The first three of the 20 new trams are currently in different stages of production at Končar’s facility. They are expected to start operating on Zagreb’s tracks by spring next year, possibly even sooner, Večernji list said.

Hybrid Innovation

Nicknamed “Plave munje” (Blue Lightning) by locals, the current tram models NT 2200 and 2300 will soon be joined by the state-of-the-art NT 2400.

These new trams will introduce a groundbreaking hybrid system, operating not only on electricity from overhead lines but also on battery power.

The batteries will recharge using energy generated from braking, a concept known as regenerative braking, widely used in the automotive industry but a first for public transport in Croatia.

This system will reduce power consumption and allow the tram to continue running even in the event of a power outage. The battery will also assist during acceleration, the most energy-intensive phase of travel, potentially lowering electricity costs for ZET.

Modern and Passenger-Friendly Design

Like their predecessors, the new trams will be low-floor, but with several modern improvements. They will be quieter, accommodating up to 115 passengers with 27 seats and space for wheelchairs.

Accessibility will be enhanced with boarding ramps, and a fresh design will set them apart from older models.

Each tram will feature four double doors operated by sensors, as well as an advanced surveillance system for safety. Passengers will also benefit from new display screens, an upgraded station announcement system, and USB ports for charging mobile devices. The trams will be over 20 metres long and designed for speeds of up to 70 km/h.

Production and Future Expansion

Following the delivery of the trams, the city plans to expand its tram fleet further, with an additional 40 vehicles on the horizon.

The contract for the new trams was signed in June last year, with a production schedule set to deliver four new vehicles each month.

The project is the first major tram purchase for Zagreb in two decades.
