New 900-metre route links Velika Gorica with popular lake

ZAGREB, 13 August 2026 (Hina) – A new 900-metre pedestrian and cycle path has been completed alongside Lake Čiče, improving access between Velika Gorica and one of the city’s most popular spots for recreation and leisure.

The newly completed route runs from the beginning of Sisačka Street, near a shopping centre, to the popular Čič Beach. The project is designed to provide pedestrians and cyclists with a safer and more convenient way to reach the lake.

Alongside the asphalted path, 33 street lighting columns have been installed, making the route more accessible and safer to use during the evening. Benches and waste bins will also be added along the route.

Velika Gorica Mayor Krešimir Ačkar welcomed the completion, describing the project as another step towards strengthening the city’s cycling infrastructure and improving connections to the area known locally as the city’s “Turopolje sea”.

The city said the new route forms part of a wider plan to connect Velika Gorica with surrounding settlements and its network of lakes. An already completed route towards Staro Čiče, running past the former radar site, has shown strong demand from residents for recreational and cycling connections.

Further development and linking of these routes could eventually create a larger recreational network connecting several lakes and surrounding settlements in the Velika Gorica area.

The city currently has more than 60 kilometres of cycle paths. Authorities say continued investment in connecting these routes is intended not only to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians but also to encourage residents to use bicycles for everyday journeys rather than solely for recreation.

The latest project adds another section to that growing network and strengthens the connection between the city and Lake Čiče.
