Croatian military appoints its first ever female senior NCO

For the first time in the history of the Croatian Armed Forces (HV), a woman has been appointed as the Senior Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) of a branch.

Chief Master Sergeant Nevena Ramić has taken on this prestigious role in the Croatian Air Force (HRZ), marking a significant milestone.

The appointment was officially announced on 21 January 2024, during a ceremony at the Ministry of Defence. Attending were Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Ivan Anušić, along with Chief of the General Staff Lieutenant General Tihomir Kundid.

Nevena Ramić, born in 1971 in Zadar, joined the Croatian Armed Forces in 1991 and actively participated in the Homeland War.

Her extensive career has included numerous key roles, and she has been with the Croatian Air Force since 2003.

She has completed advanced military NCO training in Croatia and abroad, earning widespread recognition for her service.

Ramić is a decorated officer, honoured with several prestigious awards, including the Order of the Croatian Interlace and the Storm Medal.

Minister Anušić praised Ramić for her dedication and achievements, stating, “This is yet another testament to the equality and recognition of exceptional abilities within our modern and strong Croatian Armed Forces. You are an inspiration to all current and future members of the HV.”

In her acceptance speech, Ramić expressed gratitude and reaffirmed her commitment to excellence, saying, “It is an honour to be the first woman appointed as the Senior NCO of the Croatian Air Force. My years in the Homeland War inspire me deeply, and I feel a strong sense of belonging to the Croatian Armed Forces.”

General Kundid also commended her historic appointment, adding, “This is a major step forward for the Armed Forces. You have dedicated your life to this calling since 1991, and it is wonderful to see your efforts recognised.”

The appointment highlights the growing role of women in the Croatian Armed Forces, where women now make up nearly 15% of personnel. Ramić’s historic achievement serves as a powerful symbol of progress and inspiration for future generations.
