Neretva mandarins face difficult harvest

Croatia’s Neretva Valley is preparing for the start of this year’s mandarin harvest, but growers are facing a combination of weather and pest-related challenges.

Harvesting is expected to begin within the next two to three weeks in one of Croatia’s most important citrus-growing areas.

Producers are expecting an average overall crop, but as Slobodna Dalmacija writes, conditions during the growing season have already affected the fruit.

A dry spring and summer, combined with prolonged periods of exceptionally high temperatures and strong solar radiation, have placed additional pressure on plantations.

Early varieties in particular are showing signs of smaller fruit.

Growers are also concerned about the Mediterranean fruit fly, a pest capable of causing significant damage to citrus production.

The issue has become particularly sensitive because producers say organised measures to control the pest have not been implemented to the extent they believe is necessary.

The Neretva Valley is one of Croatia’s best-known agricultural areas, with mandarins forming an important part of the local economy and agricultural identity.

The harvest therefore has significance beyond individual farms, with the crop supporting producers, seasonal workers, packing operations and other businesses connected with the agricultural supply chain.

The timing of this year’s harvest will also come after an unusually hot summer, which has added to concerns about agricultural production across parts of Croatia.

While the expected overall yield is not currently described as a failure, growers face uncertainty over fruit size, quality and the potential impact of pests as harvesting approaches.

The Mediterranean fruit fly remains one of the key concerns because damage can affect both the appearance and marketability of fruit.

Growers are now entering the crucial period in which weather conditions and pest pressure could determine the final quality of the crop.

The Neretva mandarin harvest traditionally attracts attention on Croatia’s domestic market and among buyers looking for locally produced citrus.

This year, producers will be hoping that conditions improve before picking begins.
