Construction has officially begun on a major fast road project in Bosnia and Herzegovina that will connect the city of Mostar with the Croatian border near Imotski, marking a significant step towards improved regional connectivity.

The new route will run through western Herzegovina and is expected to strengthen links with Croatia and, by extension, the European Union.

Croatian authorities have already announced plans to continue construction from the border to the motorway near Zagvozd, creating a seamless transport corridor.

Preparatory works are currently underway on two sections of the road. The first 12 kilometres, stretching from the western junction towards Široki Brijeg to the eastern junction near Grude, are scheduled for completion by mid-2028.

Project manager Matej Zovko told HRT that the works are currently focused on site clearance.

The next phases will include relocating infrastructure, resolving technical conflicts, followed by excavation and route preparation.

Local officials have welcomed the project, highlighting its importance for both residents and the wider economy.

The new road is expected to ease congestion through central areas of Široki Brijeg while improving access to Croatian and EU markets, particularly important for the region’s export-oriented industries.

Economic experts also point to reduced transport costs, shorter travel times and faster logistics as key benefits.

According to Marko Šantić, president of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina Chamber of Commerce, the road will enable businesses to respond more efficiently to new market opportunities.

The project is considered one of the most significant infrastructure investments in western Herzegovina, with funding secured by the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

However, officials stress that the road alone will not guarantee economic growth. Its success will depend on coordinated efforts across sectors to maximise its potential.
