1 January 2019 – Croatian captain Luka Modrić was probably wishing 2018 would never end.

Modrić, who led Croatia to the World Cup final this summer, created history in 2018 by becoming the first footballer to win the Ballon d’Or and the UEFA and FIFA Player of the Year title in the same year.

Modrić cleaned up nearly all awards on offer in 2018.

Apart from being named Croatian Sportsman of the Year for the first time this month, he also claimed in 2018 the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Champions League, 2018 World Cup Golden Ball for best player at the tournament, UEFA Player of the Year, FIFA ‘Best’ Player of the Year, FIFA ‘Best’ World XI, IFFHS Playmaker of the Year, runners-up medal at the World Cup and the prestigious Ballon d’Or.

“What. A. Year!,” is what the Modrić said as he posted a photo of himself with all his trophies for his last social media post of 2018.

The post has had over 1.6 million likes and 11 thousand shares on Instagram.

The 33-year-old said earlier this month that he has no plans on stepping away from the national team and is as hungry as ever to keep adding more trophies.
