Hajduk Split striker Marko Livaja, who announced his retirement from the Croatian national team in October 2023, has revealed his desire to don the red and white checkers once again.

The 31-year-old, who was just named the HNL player of the year chosen by captains for the third time, retired following a turbulent period.

Livaja was excluded from Croatia’s UEFA Nations League finals squad in 2023 after an incident during an open training session in Rijeka.

Spectators directed abuse at Livaja, prompting him to confront them in the stands. The situation escalated, and Livaja had to be restrained.

Following discussions with coach Zlatko Dalić, it was agreed that the incident created an uncomfortable atmosphere, and Livaja left the squad ahead of the finals.

In a recent interview with Tportal, Livaja was asked about a possible return to the Croatian national team.

“I have the desire, and I have spoken with the president of the Federation, Kustić. He is the only person I have talked to. He knows my thoughts on the matter, and I would prefer not to say anything further on the topic. I follow the team, wish them all the best, and hope they achieve the best possible results,” Livaja said.

Readers of daily Slobodna Dalmacija were asked in a poll whether Livaja should return to the national team. The opinion was clear – 70% said absolutely yes.

Livaja has played 21 matches for Croatia, scoring four goals.
