Marin Čilić, Dominic Thiem and Stan Wawrinka confirmed for Croatia Open in Umag

More big names have been announced today for the Plava Laguna Croatia Open ATP tournament in Umag.

Local hero Marin Čilić and Dominic Thiem have both been confirmed to play by the organisers.

Čilić, who won the title back in 2012 and the semi-finals in 2011 and 2014, last played at the Umag tournament seven years ago.

Thiem has played at Stella Maris just once when he won it back in 2015. Three-time Grand Slam champion, Stan Wawrinka, was announced to play in Umag last month.

“All three players announced so far have won a handful of titles at the biggest tournaments during their careers, and all of them have in common that at one point in their careers, they even reached third place on the individual ATP list. Also, all three can boast of having won titles at Grand Slam tournaments. Plava Laguna invests a lot in the tournament, which in the last few years has been raised to an extremely high level of sport, at which we certainly want it to remain. There will be more good news about the players at this year’s tournament, and an equally high-quality entertainment and sports program is expected outside the tennis courts”, says Dragan Pujas, president of the Croatia Open Umag Organizing Committee and president of the Plava Laguna Management Board.

“We have waited for over a decade to have a current Grand Slam champion at our tournament, and this year we have three! What’s even more amazing is that all three of them are former Umag champions. We took advantage of the opportunity that opened on the market and arranged for Marin Čilić and Dominic Thiem to join Wawrinka. Marin is making a comeback after his injury and we are delighted that Umag fits into his this year’s tournament schedule. As for Dominic, he has struggled with an injury and is working his way back into form, but the last few tournaments, especially the match against Tsitsipas in Madrid, have shown that he is very close to regaining top form. I believe that all three of them will raise their game even more by the start of the tournament and give the spectators a real taste of top-class tennis,” says Tournament Director Tomislav Poljak.

The Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag tournament, organized by the tourism company Plava Laguna, will take place from 24-30 July 2023.
