Luka Modrić is set to join Italian giants AC Milan following the conclusion of the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, according to respected football insider Fabrizio Romano.
“Confirmed: Luka Modrić will sign in as new AC Milan player after Club World Cup. The verbal agreement is done and sealed with medical to follow in July, exclusive story confirmed since start of June for Luka’s future,” Romano wrote.
Although the Croatian captain recently said during international duty that he had not yet decided on his next club, rumours have been swirling since early June linking the 39-year-old with a move to the seven-time European champions.
Now it appears the deal is close to completion.
AC Milan’s sporting director, Igli Tare, confirmed the club’s interest in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, emphasising Modrić’s ambition and leadership qualities.
“I spoke with him and saw a man eager to compete. His arrival is crucial for a squad that needs players who can lead,” said Tare.
“The first thing Luka asked me was: Are we a team built to win the title? He has won six Champions League titles and wants to be a key figure from the very start.”
Tare also revealed that Modrić was a Milan fan as a boy and admired former Croatian captain Zvonimir Boban, who played for the club during its golden era.
“He is important to us because of the mentality, leadership and professionalism he brings. The fact that he supported Milan as a child makes this story even more exciting. It would be ideal for him to finish the season as a protagonist, especially with the World Cup coming next year,” Tare added.

Modrić is currently in the United States with Real Madrid, playing his final matches for the Spanish club at the Club World Cup. A medical in Milan is scheduled for July once he returns to Europe.
Modrić joined Real Madrid in 2012 and has since become one of the most decorated players in the club’s history, winning a record 28 trophies. As his remarkable chapter in Spain comes to an end, a new adventure in Italy is about to begin.
