Luka Modrić: The reason I stayed at Milan and what I still want to achieve

MADRID, 6 August 2026 (Hina) – Croatia captain Luka Modrić has spoken publicly for the first time since extending his contract with AC Milan, revealing that he had decided to stay as early as December but deliberately waited before signing.

In an interview with Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the 40-year-old said he wanted to be certain he still had the physical condition, motivation and passion required to continue competing at the highest level.

“I already wanted to continue for another year. I could have signed the contract in December, but I wanted to listen to my body. I needed to know if I was still as hungry for success and whether I still had the same desire and passion for football. The answers were exactly what I expected, I still feel good and have everything needed to continue,” Modrić said.

The Croatian captain added that the confidence shown by both the club and its supporters played a decisive role in his decision.

“Milan gave me what every footballer wants, trust and loyalty. The club and the fans stood by me throughout, and that was the main reason I decided to stay,” he explained.

Modrić also paid tribute to legendary Milan captain Franco Baresi, describing him as one of his childhood football idols. He said Baresi embodied the spirit of Milan through his humility, leadership and example, calling his passing a huge loss for the club and its supporters.

He added that winning a trophy with Milan and dedicating it to Baresi would be a fitting tribute.

Reflecting on last season, Modrić admitted it ended in disappointment after Milan failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. He also expressed regret that injury prevented him from helping the team during the closing stages of the campaign.

The Croatian midfielder made 37 appearances for Milan last season as the club finished fifth in Serie A.

Looking ahead, Modrić said he has been encouraged by his early impressions of new head coach Rúben Amorim, adding that the squad is eager to embrace his ideas.

He also praised new Portuguese striker Gonçalo Ramos, describing him as an outstanding forward who could provide qualities Milan had been missing. Asked about teammate Rafael Leão, Modrić said he hopes the winger remains at the club, calling him one of the world’s best players when at his peak.

Despite a glittering career that includes 28 trophies with Real Madrid, including six Champions League titles, Modrić insists his ambition remains unchanged.

“When I arrived here, I said I wanted to win with Milan, and that dream is still alive. I want to lift trophies wearing this shirt. Whether it’s the Scudetto or another title, my goal has not changed. I didn’t come here simply to enjoy myself, I came with a clear dream and a clear objective,” he concluded.

Modrić came on in the second half on Wednesay night in Perth in the 1-1 draw with Inter Milan, much to the delight of the Croatian fans who turned out in numbers.
