But that does not mean you still can’t impress locals and make a few people laugh by learning some well-known Croatian sayings or phrases.

In this series we will teach you commonly used sayings in Croatia which are not typically found in language learning material.

Today’s saying:

s konja na magarca – pronunciation [s-con-yar-nar-mar-gar-sar]

English: The phrase s konja na magarca is used to describe someone who has taken a drop in standards in some way or another. For example, it could be used for someone who may have enjoyed a high-flying lifestyle but had to scale it all back after losing all their money. 

The literal translation is – from a horse to a donkey.
