croatian sayings phrases

Is the Croatian language hard to learn? If you ask most people new to the language they would say it definitely is.

But that does not mean you still can’t impress locals and make a few people laugh by learning some well-known Croatian sayings or phrases.

In this series we will teach you commonly used sayings in Croatia which are not typically found in language learning material.

Today’s saying:

Ja u kupe, a ti u špade

Ja u kupe, a ti u špade is an old phrase used in Croatia with Dalmatian origins, and is usually used when two people are speaking and one will answer another with something that has no relevance to what the other is talking about.

Used when someone goes off topic.

The literal translation of the phrase relates to suits of playing cards (Italian) – ‘I am playing Cubs (Kupe), and you are playing Swords (špade)’. Playing a completely different suit than is being played.
