Learning Croatian: Phrase of the Week

Croatia21

You know some basic Croatian, enough to get you by, but there is nothing that will impress more than knowing a local phrase or slang that you can slip into a conversation. Our ‘Word / Phrase of the Week’ will teach you a variety of words and phrases commonly used in Croatia, but not commonly found in language learning material.

Today’s Phrase:

‘Bog je prvo sebi bradu stvorio’

Croatia

The phrase ‘Bog je prvo sebi bradu stvorio’ basically has the same meaning as ‘before you help others, help yourself’. Used for people who take care of number one – themselves. The type of people who might eat that last piece of chocolate or take the best seat in the place when out with friends… The literal translation is: ‘God first created his own beard’.
