You know some basic Croatian, enough to get you by, but there is nothing that will impress more than knowing a local phrase or slang that you can slip into a conversation. Our ‘Word / Phrase of the Week will teach you a variety of words and phrases commonly used in Croatia, but not commonly found in language learning material.

da padne na leđa, razbio bi nos

The phrase da padne na leđa, razbio bi nos is basically used to emphasis when somebody is extremely unlucky, that no matter what they do they can not seem to have any luck. The literal translation is – If he fell onto his back, he’d break his nose.

Example – “Did you see Vincent missed for the first time paying this week into the Lotto syndicate at work, and the numbers came in! Missed out on a share of 2 million” – “I know, he never has luck that boy, da padne na leđa, razbio bi nos...
