Learning Croatian: Phrase of the Week

Croatia

You know some basic Croatian, enough to get you by, but there is nothing that will impress more than knowing a local phrase or slang that you can slip into a conversation. Our ‘Word / Phrase of the Week will teach you a variety of words and phrases commonly used in Croatia, but not commonly found in language learning material.

Today’s Phrase:

‘s konja na magarca’

The phrase s konja na magarca is used to describe someone who has taken a drop in standards in some way or another. Could be someone who may have enjoyed a certain lifestyle and lived in a plush pad but is now renting a shack after losing all their money, or for a footballer who has signed for Stoke City from Barcelona. The literal translation is – from a horse to a donkey.

Example:
Neven: You driving an old beaten up Mazda now? What happened to your Audi?
Vincent: Lost my job at the bank, had to sell the car
Neven: s konja na magarca
