You know some basic Croatian, enough to get you by, but there is nothing that will impress more than knowing a local phrase or slang that you can slip into a conversation. Croatia Week has launched its ‘Word / Phrase of the Day’, where we will teach you a variety of words and phrases commonly used in Croatia, but not commonly found in language learning material…
Mi o vuku, a vuk na vrata
The phrase Mi o vuku, a vuk na vrata is basically the Croatian equivalent of ‘speak of the devil’…to be talking about someone, who then will appear. The literal translation of the phrase is – While we are talking about the wolf, the wolf is on the doorstep.
Example – “This party is rocking…geez, all it needs now is for that player Vincent to turn up and spoil it with his obnoxious behaviour” – “Oh, look who has just walked thru the door! Vincent!…Mi o vuku, a vuk na vrata”
