KBC Rijeka performs first robotic gynaecological operations

RIJEKA, 24 August 2026 – The Clinical Hospital Centre Rijeka (KBC Rijeka) has successfully carried out its first robot-assisted surgical procedures in gynaecology, marking a new stage in the hospital’s development of minimally invasive surgery.

The first procedures were performed at the hospital’s Clinic of Gynaecology and Obstetrics using a newly acquired robotic surgical system. The technology enables surgeons to carry out complex operations through several small incisions, with a high-resolution three-dimensional view of the surgical field and magnification.

The system translates the surgeon’s hand movements into highly precise instrument movements, while filtering natural hand tremor and providing a wider range of motion than the human hand.

For patients, minimally invasive robotic surgery can mean smaller incisions, less blood loss, shorter hospital stays and a faster return to everyday activities, depending on the procedure and individual circumstances.

The robotic system, valued at €5.11 million, was financed in full directly from the state budget of the Republic of Croatia.

Croatia’s Health Minister Irena Hrstić visited KBC Rijeka following the successful first procedures. She highlighted the hospital’s continued development under director Alemka Brnčić-Fischer and its efforts to provide patients with modern, safe and specialised healthcare.

The introduction of robotic surgery also builds on KBC Rijeka’s long-standing experience in minimally invasive procedures. The hospital said the technology will provide additional opportunities for the education of medical students and advanced training of specialist and subspecialist doctors.

KBC Rijeka said the investment strengthens its medical and scientific capabilities and supports its development as a regional centre of excellence in surgery.
