Ivo Karlović Breaks World Aces Record

ivo-karlovicBig-serving Croatian tennis player Ivo Karlović has equalled a world record on Tuesday night as he advanced through to the second round of the PBZ Zagreb Indoors in the Croatian capital…

Karlović, who nearly ended his professional playing career last year after an illness which left his in hospital for months, equalled a world record previously set by Australian Mark Philippoussis when he sent down 44 aces in his victory over German Daniel Brands  6-7, 7-5, 7-6. The giant Croat now jointly holds the record for the highest amount of aces in a best of 3 set match. What was just as remarkable in his win last night was that he only lost one point on his serve in the first set – a point in the tie breaker which he lost.

“It is really an unbelievable statistic,” said Karlović after the match, “I will remember this match, if anything for the number of aces.” Karlović’s previous record was 38 aces in Basel in 2007 against Tomas Berdych.
