ZAGREB, 14 July 2020 – With almost 80% of last year’s number of tourists so far in July, Croatia’s most visited destination is the island of Vir.

Whilst numbers are only slightly down from this time last year, there are in fact 30% more German tourists this year.

“I think we should stay protected all the time because now are in really bad times, all related to the infection, Rustan, a tourist from Germany, told HRT.

As well as Germans, Vir’s traditional guests from the Czech Republic have also returned this year despite the situation.

“We have masks, of course. If we go to the store, we use them,” said Petr Nemec, a tourist from the Czech Republic.

The beaches are not as crowded as in previous years and deck chairs are placed at the recommended distance. However, so far in July, Vir has the most overnight stays on the Adriatic coast.

“Counting today, we have already gone far beyond 500,000 overnight stays, which is 20 percent less than last year, but that number is still very impressive,” says Srđan Iverić, director of the Vir Tourist Board.

Last year, Vir was the second most visited destination in Croatia for the whole of July in terms of overnight stays, Iverić added.
