ZAGREB, 22 June 2026 – A heatwave affecting Croatia and much of Europe is expected to continue throughout the week, and into next week, bringing temperatures of up to 36°C in parts of the country.
Croatia’s State Hydrometeorological Institute (DHMZ) has forecast predominantly sunny and hot conditions, with daily temperatures ranging climbing up to 35°C.
Despite repeated advice from health experts to avoid spending extended periods outdoors during the hottest part of the day, large numbers of tourists continue to visit Croatia’s most popular destinations. Cities including Dubrovnik, Split and Zadar remain busy with visitors, even as sightseeing conditions become increasingly challenging due to the heat.
DHMZ Director-General Ivan Güttler told HRT high temperatures are expected to persist across much of Croatia over the coming ten days.
Heat warnings are in place for the Dubrovnik, Split and Rijeka regions, leaving Rijeka under a dual warning for both high temperatures and possible severe weather.
Seasonal forecasts indicate that Croatia is likely to experience another warmer-than-average summer. However, Güttler noted that heatwaves can be temporarily interrupted by localised thunderstorms and heavy rainfall, which may bring short-term relief from extreme temperatures.
He also highlighted the broader climate trend, noting that the past ten years have been the warmest on record globally. According to Güttler, ongoing global warming continues to drive rising temperatures, with average global temperatures increasing by around one-third of a degree every decade.
Across Europe, south-western regions are expected to be among the hardest hit by the current heatwave. Spain, France and the United Kingdom are experiencing particularly high temperatures, with parts of France forecast to exceed 40°C in the coming days.
Authorities continue to remind residents and visitors that prolonged exposure to extreme heat can pose serious health risks and advise taking appropriate precautions during the hottest periods of the day.
