New road opens in Gorski Kotar, taking heavy traffic away from Fužine centre

FUŽINE, 31 August 2026 – A new bypass has opened in Fužine, in Croatia’s Gorski Kotar region, diverting transit, heavy and forestry traffic away from the centre of the mountain municipality, the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure said on Monday.
The approximately 1-kilometre road, connecting Mostići with Donje Selo, was officially opened on Monday, 31 August. The project was worth €3.1 million excluding VAT and was delivered by a consortium led by GP Krk and Goran graditeljstvo Delnice.
The new route is designed to improve traffic safety and flow, while reducing congestion, noise and heavy vehicle traffic through the centre of Fužine.
Croatian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković said the project, although relatively modest in financial value, was important for the future development of Fužine, Gorski Kotar and Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.
He noted that the Croatian Government and Hrvatske ceste had taken over responsibility for the project following an agreement initiated by the municipality and county.

Fužine Mayor Ana Merle said the bypass would redirect traffic heading towards the Lič business zone and Drvenjača, as well as forestry traffic, away from the centre and the streets around Franje Račkog and Donje Selo.
The project is also expected to support local businesses and improve conditions for residents, while making travel through the area easier for visitors.
Primorje-Gorski Kotar County Prefect Ivica Lukanović highlighted the road’s importance for both quality of life and economic activity, particularly for businesses in the Lič area.

Hrvatske ceste President Ivica Budimir said the company had invested around €160 million in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County over the past decade.
He added that bypasses around smaller settlements, improved road safety and removing heavy vehicles from town centres would remain priorities for Hrvatske ceste across Croatia.
