Croatia has beautiful nature, beautiful people and beautiful towns and villages with, sometimes, names that will make you chuckle.
Even though unusual today, back in the day some of these names probably sounded different. They were connected to animals, geographic structure, and, well, sometimes even to body parts.
There has even been a commercial made celebrating the quirkiness of some of the place names in the country. Here are just some of them to see what exactly what we mean.
Ludbreg – Translation: ‘Crazyhill’ – It is a city in Varaždin county known as the centre of the world. The folk of Ludbreg claim that if you were to spread a map of the world flat, then it is their town which is bang smack in the middle.
Špičkovina – Translation: Let’s just say it contains a derogatory word for female genitalia plus a few extra letters – It is located in Krapina in the Zagorje County.
Gornje and Donje Cjepidlake – Translation: Gornje and Donje mean ‘Upper’ and ‘Lower’ whilst Cjepidlake means ‘splitting hairs’ or slang for someone super pedantic – They are places in the Bjelovar – Bilogora County.
Pivnica Slavonska – Translation: ‘Slavonian Alehouse’ – The place called a beer hall is located near Cjepidlake.
Grudnjak – Translation: ‘Bra’ – It is located in the Virovitica – Podravina County.
Gačice – Translation: ‘Panties’ – Which is in Varaždin county.
Babina Greda – Translation: ‘Grandma’s Balk’ – A village in Vukovar – Srijem County.
Svinjarevci – Translation: Basically means ‘Pigs’ – Another village in Vukovar – Srijem County.
Štakorovec – Translation: ‘Rats’ – It is located in Zagreb County.
Ženodraga – Translation: ‘Dear wife’ – Which is found near Višnjan also in Istria.
Gaćelezi – Translation: It is a combination of 2 words – ‘panties’ and ‘lie down’ – It is located in Šibenik – Knin County.
