PARIS, 31 May 2019 – Croatian Petra Martić has shocked former world number one and the French Open’s second seed to book a place in the last 16 at Roland-Garros on Friday.

Martić, who has been in great form in 2019, knocked out Karolína Plíšková in straight sets on Philippe Chartier court today, winning 6-3, 6-3 in just under one and a half hours.

The 28-year-old, who reached her career-high ranking of world No. 28 this month, broke the former world no. 1 twice in the opening set to race to a 1-0 lead.

Martić broke Plíšková in her opening service game of the second set but the Czech would break straight back. Plíšková, who has won thirteen singles and five doubles titles on the WTA tour, broke again in the 5th game but was broken immediately by the Croatian in the next game.

The key moment in the second set came in the 8th game when a Martić winner gave her the break to go 5-3 up. She would hold serve to record a memorable victory.

Martic has one WTA singles title as well as one WTA 125k series title to her credit. In April she was nominated for the WTA Player of the month.

Next up for Martić is the winner of the Kanepi/Kudermetova Round of 32 match.
