PARIS, 31 May 2019 – There are two Croatians remaining in the last 16 of the women’s singles at the 2019 French open.

It has been a good day for Croatian players on court today. After Petra Martić upset world no. 2 Karolína Plíšková earlier in the day, Vekić joined her in the last 16 with a straight sets win over 22-year-old Belinda Bencic from Switzerland.

Vekić beat the tournament’s 15th seed in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 in just over an hour on Friday on Court 1.

After a tight first set, Vekić ran away with the match in the second set, hitting 8 aces and 25 winners to reach the fourth round at a Grand Slam for the second time.

The 22-year-old Croatian, who achieved her career-high singles ranking of world No. 24 this month, will face the winner of the Johanna Konta/Viktoria Kuzmova match in the last 16.

Her best perfromance to date at a Grand Slam was reaching the last 16 at Wimbledon last year.
