An art exhibition by David Byrne, the former front man of 70s and 80s band Talking Heads, will open in Zagreb’s Contra Art Gallery on Friday…

On 11 March at 7pm a special exhibition featuring the photography works of award-winning singer, songwriter and actor David Byrne will open. Byrne has been involved in photography since a young age, but has only recently exhibited his work. His photography, which is mostly taken on his travels around the world, is often described as ‘elevating the mundane or the banal to the level of art’. His other works were composed in his studio, using a variety of photographic media, including polaroids, Cibachromes, Cibatransparencies and digital processes.

Some of the photos might be considered “documentary”, though they are not really about a specific place or time. Rather, they are about the choice of the things, or lack of things, that is photographed. In particular, the lack of people stands out in his work.

Byrne is famous for being the founder and lead singer of one of the most prominent bands of the 20th century – Talking Heads. With his experimental music and alternative rock Byrne moved the boundaries of musical expression.

Byrne has had his works exhibited recently around the world in Germany, USA, Japan and Italy. Now the Croatian capital is next. Galerija Contra is located at Frankopanska 22 in downtown Zagreb.
