Since Croatia adopted the euro on 1 January 2023, replacing the kuna, consumers have observed notable increases in the prices of various goods, including fish.

Despite the rising prices, there are still big queues, mainly on Fridays, outside fish markets in Croatia. This Friday fish-eating custom stems from religious practices, with many Croatians abstaining from meat on this day.

Sardines (srdela) are one of the most popular on the menu for many Croatian household on Fridays. They are usually fried and accompanied with a potato salad.

Traditionally known for their affordability, sardines are now priced at approximately €4 per kilo at Zagreb’s fish markets.

At the end of the kuna era, srdela cost around 15 kuna per kilo (€2).

Despite this increase, their popularity remains undiminished, frequently leading to early sell-outs on Fridays.

Another favourite, squid (lignje) has also seen a big increase recently. Today, one will be hard pressed to find Adriatic squid for under €25 per kilo.

Not so long ago you could pick up a kilo for around 120 kuna (around €15).
