First direct train from Warsaw arrives in Rijeka, marking new era in Croatia–Poland travel

Rijeka, 28 June – A new chapter in Croatian–Polish relations was written on Saturday morning as the first direct passenger train from Warsaw arrived at Rijeka’s main railway station.

The historic connection marks the launch of a summer rail service that will run three times a week throughout July and August, directly linking the two countries.

The train, which arrived at 10:45, brought 161 passengers to Rijeka and was greeted with an official welcome that included music, speeches and a festive atmosphere.

Rijeka Mayor Iva Rinčić was among the officials present to mark the occasion.

“This moment carries special meaning for us,” said Mayor Rinčić. “Not only are we connecting two friendly nations by railway, but we are opening the door to a new stage of cooperation – cultural, touristic and economic. Welcome to Rijeka – a city that values diversity, nurtures friendship and builds bridges between people.”

Also attending the welcome ceremony were Petar Škarpa, Director of Rijeka’s Tourist Board; Robert Matić, Deputy Prefect of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County; Tomislav Vidošević, Croatian Ambassador to Poland; and Paweł Włodarczyk, Honorary Consul of Croatia in Kraków.

The musical programme featured Croatian artist David Danijel, who performed songs in both Croatian and Polish. Guests from Warsaw and Katowice later enjoyed sightseeing in Rijeka and Opatija before returning to Poland on Sunday, 29 June at 18:00.

The new international rail line runs along the route Warsaw – Vienna – Ljubljana – Rijeka and will operate until the end of August.

Schedule and Pricing Details

In July, trains from Poland will run on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, except on 18 and 25 July. In August, departures from Warsaw are scheduled for Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and on Sunday, 24 August.

Return journeys from Rijeka and Ljubljana will begin on 29 and 30 June, with departures on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays in July, excluding 18 and 25 July. In August, trains will run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, as well as Sunday, 24 August.

Along the Croatian section of the route, the train will also stop at Šapjane and Matulji in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.

Ticket prices start from 44.90 euros for seated places, while sleeping carriage options begin at 66.90 euros.

The introduction of this direct train service is expected to strengthen tourism links between Poland and the Kvarner region and provide a comfortable and scenic travel alternative between the two countries.
