ZAGREB, 27 May 2025 (Hina) – A feature-length biographical film is in development about Mišo Kovač, one of Croatia’s most beloved music icons.
More than just a tribute to an individual, the film promises to be a story about a time, a people, and the emotions that found expression through his music.
Currently titled Mišo, the project takes its name from a figure who became a living legend, holding the title of the best-selling recording artist in the region.
His songs have left an indelible mark on the collective memory of generations. According to the announcement, this will be the first biopic of its scale in Croatian cinema.
The film is being developed by producer Vanja Sremac for SoMi Productions.
The screenplay is being written by author Milana Vlaović Kovaček, who has spent the past two years researching Kovač’s rich and cinematic life story.
She has worked closely with Mišo himself, his family, and long-time collaborators to capture the essence of his remarkable biography and discography.
“Mišo is a hero of our time who truly deserves a film. His life is an emotional and majestic saga of triumphs and defeats – but never surrender,” said Vlaović Kovaček.
“Writing this script has felt like diving into memory in its purest form, because through Mišo’s songs, everything important in our lives has been sung.”
Joining her in the screenwriting process is acclaimed Bosnian-Herzegovinian filmmaker Pjer Žalica, one of the most respected directors in the region. Žalica expressed both pride and excitement at the opportunity to work on the project.
“Mišo’s musical career has the stature of a mythic superstar, while his private life resembles a classical tragedy,” Žalica explained.
“That combination gives us an extraordinary foundation for a powerful and meaningful film that people will connect with.”

The film will be directed by Vinko Brešan, himself a native of Šibenik like Kovač. Brešan is behind some of the most successful and popular Croatian films, including The Priest’s Children, Marshal Tito’s Spirit, and How the War Started on My Island, as well as the beloved TV series Diary of Great Perica.
“The only thing that matters here is Mišo’s story,” Brešan stated. “I feel privileged to have the chance to bring it to a wider audience. The responsibility is enormous, but the opportunity is unique.”
Mišo Kovač, in a brief comment on the project, said: “I know what Brešan has done in his life, and I respect that.”
The project is being developed in collaboration with Mišo Kovač, his wife Lidija, his family, and long-time business associate Tomislav Madžar.
There is already strong interest in the film’s wide release. Blitz Film and Video Distribution has expressed enthusiasm for the project, believing it has the potential to become “one of the most significant works in Croatian cinema – artistically, culturally, and emotionally.”
