An exceptional high tide, combined with strong jugo winds, has caused coastal flooding in parts of Kaštela, as central Dalmatia continues to assess the aftermath of the severe weather.

The stormy conditions, which struck during the night from Wednesday into Thursday, brought powerful southerly winds and a cyclonic tide that led to seawater entering homes, businesses and other coastal properties.

The most affected areas were the Lower Kaštela settlements, where the sea surged over waterfronts and flooded multiple premises close to the shoreline.

Firefighters were deployed across Kaštela to respond to numerous emergency calls, primarily related to seawater penetration into residential buildings.

Despite the dramatic scenes, early assessments indicate that no major damage has been recorded to critical infrastructure.

The situation was inspected on-site by Split-Dalmatia County Prefect Blaženko Boban and the Mayor of Kaštela, Denis Ivanović, who visited the waterfront in Kaštel Stari to evaluate the impact of the storm surge.

“Based on what we have seen on the ground, there is no significant damage to the waterfront itself,” Boban said. “If necessary, funds can be secured through the County’s maritime department to assist with repairs. In any case, this waterfront is due to undergo a complete redevelopment, with project documentation already finalised and the public procurement process nearing completion.”

Boban also revealed that Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković contacted him during the day to inquire about the situation and potential consequences of the storm.

“The Prime Minister called to check on conditions in Kaštela, any damage and possible needs. This demonstrates the Government’s concern and readiness to provide full support should it be required,” Boban added.

Mayor Ivanović thanked the County Prefect for his visit and support, stressing that city services had reacted immediately as conditions deteriorated.

“According to initial estimates, there has been some damage, but fortunately nothing severe,” Ivanović said. “We are currently analysing the situation on the ground, particularly in relation to flooding in private properties. If assistance is needed, the City of Kaštela will respond promptly and support its residents.”

Special praise was given to firefighters and emergency services for their swift response, as well as to residents for their cooperation during the incident.

“City services and firefighters remained in constant coordination with citizens whose homes were affected by flooding,” Boban said. “I thank everyone who reacted quickly and helped mitigate the consequences of this local natural event in Kaštel Stari and surrounding areas.”

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, with emergency services remaining on standby as the risk from high tides and unstable weather conditions has not yet fully passed.
