Croatia captain Darijo Srna is set to return to France tonight after returning to Croatia to attend his father’s funeral on Monday…

“Darijo knew his father was gravely ill but you can never be ready for that kind of news,” coach Ante Čačić told the media today. “One thing is certain, Darijo will soon be back so that he can be at his best on Friday, he will do everything he can to arrive this evening. He is a stable and strong personality,” Čačić, who returned with Srna to attend the funeral in Croatia yesterday, added.

Srna’s father, who had been suffering from cancer, passed away around the time of Croatia’s opening Group D victory over Turkey on Monday. He was only told of the death after the match. Srna is expected to join up with his teammates tonight ahead of Friday’s Euro 2016 encounter with the Czech Republic in St Etienne.

Srna did not return with the team to their camp in Deauville on Sunday but instead travelled to his hometown of Metkovic for the funeral with a number of the team’s backroom staff and coach.
