EU moves to end mobile roaming charges with six Western Balkan countries

ZAGREB, 27 Feb (Hina) – The European Commission on Wednesday proposed opening negotiations with six Western Balkan countries to eliminate mobile roaming charges.

“Surprise bills or higher charges when travelling are something we no longer know inside the EU. Today we proposed to extend this to the Western Balkans,” Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said.

Once the agreements are finalised with each of the partners and once they have each fully aligned with EU roaming rules, people travelling between the EU and Western Balkans will be able to make calls, send text messages and use mobile data without roaming surcharges.

The Council of the EU must first mandate the Commission to start negotiations with Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Serbia.

The Commission will then negotiate bilateral agreements with each country.

Roaming charges within the EU were officially abolished on 15 June 2017, allowing users to pay the same rates as at home while travelling within the EU.
