The City of Dubrovnik has begun work on one of its most significant infrastructure projects focused on sustainable mobility, with the construction of a new Park & Ride system at Pobrežje.

The project is designed to reduce traffic pressure in the city’s historic core by encouraging visitors to park outside the centre and continue their journey using public transport.

Construction officially started on 17 March 2026, with contractor Texo Molior introduced to the site. The works are scheduled to last 16 months. Preparatory and earthworks are currently underway, including large-scale excavation following detailed geodetic marking of the site.

Capacity and design

The Park & Ride facility will provide a total of 572 parking spaces. This includes 530 spaces for passenger vehicles, with 28 designated for people with disabilities. In addition, there will be 20 spaces for buses and 16 for taxis.

The development will also feature two bus terminals, each equipped with three bays for passenger boarding and alighting, along with pedestrian zones and landscaped green areas.

Due to the challenging terrain, the car park will be built in cascades using reinforced concrete retaining structures. This approach ensures efficient use of space while minimising environmental impact.

The project has been aligned with Natura 2000 environmental standards and incorporates a range of sustainability measures. These include the use of solar energy, LED lighting, the planting of native trees, and systems for collecting rainwater.

Infrastructure for separate waste collection will also be installed, further supporting environmental goals.

The total value of the works stands at €6.47 million (including VAT). The majority of funding, €5.97 million, comes from non-repayable EU funds through the Integrated Territorial Investments (ITU) mechanism managed by the Ministry of Regional Development and EU Funds, Grad Dubrovnik said.

The Ministry is also contributing up to €1.3 million towards the City of Dubrovnik’s own share of the project.
