Dubrovnik celebrating its Saint for 1,053rd year in a row

February 3, 2025 – The Croatian city of Dubrovnik is celebrating the Feast of Saint Blaise today, continuing a tradition that has lasted for 1,053 years.

Since 972, when the city first honoured Saint Blaise as its patron, this day has been one of the most significant in Dubrovnik’s history.

Saint Blaise was born in Sebaste, a Roman-controlled area in what is now Armenia. He was a respected doctor, known for his kindness and dedication to helping the sick and poor.

Later, he became the Bishop of Sebaste but was martyred in 316. He was beaten, tortured with iron combs, and beheaded on February 3.

Recognized by UNESCO as part of the world’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Feast of Saint Blaise brings thousands of people to Dubrovnik each year.

Traditional processions and rituals, some dating back centuries, will take place once again today.

February 3 is the city’s most important day, but celebrations began yesterday with Candlemas, also known as Our Lady of Candles.

White doves were released, and the patron saint’s flag was raised in front of Saint Blaise’s Church. Later in the day, prayers were held at Dubrovnik Cathedral, where Saint Blaise’s relics were displayed.
