Significant restoration and development works are currently underway at the historic Stari Grad fortress in Đurđevac, marking a major step in preserving one of the town’s most important cultural and historical landmarks.

Three key projects are being carried out simultaneously: the reconstruction of the fortress ramparts, the restoration of its façade, and a green transition project aimed at improving the surrounding environment and overall visitor experience.

The investments are designed not only to restore the fortress to its original appearance but also to enhance its value as a cultural and tourism asset.

As part of the Town Day celebrations, Croatia’s Minister of Regional Development and EU Funds, Nataša Mikuš Žigman, visited the site to review progress.

She was joined by Đurđevac Mayor Hrvoje Janči, Member of Parliament and City Council President Željko Lacković, along with other officials and guests.

Final phase of restoration

Mayor Janči confirmed that the fortress is now in the final phase of its overall renovation, following earlier work on the roof.

Current efforts are focused on restoring the façade in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture.

Construction of the ramparts is being financed from the state budget, with completion expected in time for this year’s Picokijada festival, one of the region’s most well-known cultural events.

Meanwhile, the green infrastructure project is nearing the public procurement stage. Work is expected to begin after Picokijada and conclude by next year.

New features to enhance visitor experience

Once completed, the projects will significantly upgrade both the fortress and its surroundings. Plans include the creation of two lakes, landscaped walking paths with lighting, and improved connections between the fortress, the sports and recreation centre, and Borik forest park.

Additional features will include a new stage and auditorium, as well as carefully designed green areas.

The reconstructed ramparts will also serve a dual purpose. Alongside their historical function, they will act as a backdrop for performances of the well-known Legend of the Picoks, further strengthening the site’s tourism appeal. Part of the ramparts will also house a new “Podravinoteka”, showcasing regional wines and products.

Visitors can already view visual presentations of the planned transformation, offering a glimpse into how the fortress will look once the works are completed.
