14 March 2019 – Dinamo Zagreb have exited the UEFA Europa League after losing to Benfica 3-1 on aggregate in the Round of 16 after extra-time tonight.

New Croatian international Bruno Petković scored the only goal of the game in the first leg last week at Maksimir stadium in Zagreb to give Dinamo Zagreb a 1-0 lead going into tonight’s match at the Estádio do Sport Lisboa stadium in Lisbon.

With a number of empty seats, it was Dinamo Zagreb’s 2,500 fans who were the loudest early and they nearly had something to celebrate in the 8th minute when Théophile-Catherine went close with a header.

With few clear cut chances for either side, it was Silva who came closest for Benfica in the first half after 42 minutes, but his shot was saved by Livaković.

It would be Benfica who would apply most of the pressure in the second spell and they would eventually find the goal they needed in the 70th minute when Jonas shot from the edge of the box past Livaković.

There would be no real chances in the remaining 20 minutes for either side as the match headed into extra-time.

Benfica would take the lead on the night 2-0 just five minutes into extra-time when Ferro let fly from outside the box which would rocket past Livaković in the Dinamo goal.

Dinamo’s chances of a comeback ended when defender Stojanović was shown a red card for dissent. Grimaldo then made it 3-0 for the hosts when he long-range shot floated into the back of the net.

The draw for the quarterfinals will take place on Friday 15 March at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. The first legs will be played on 11 April, and the second legs will be played on 18 April 2019.

The final of the UEFA Europa League will be played on 29 May in Baku, Azerbaijan.
