Dinamo Zagreb defeated Hajduk Split 3-1 (video highlights below) on Saturday afternoon at Poljud stadium to move to the top of the SuperSport HNL table.
Dinamo now lead the pack with 58 points, while Rijeka and Hajduk are close behind on 56. Rijeka, however, have a game in hand.
There are three rounds remaining.
As is often the case with major derbies in Croatian football, the action wasn’t limited to the pitch. The stands saw the usual mix of passionate support and pyrotechnics – a tradition beloved by some fans but frowned upon by authorities.
Despite strict laws and regular police checks, flares still find their way into stadiums.
But one fan’s attempt to smuggle 40 flares into Poljud today stood out for its sheer creativity – and absurdity.
According to police, the supporter taped dozens of bengal flares to his torso, wrapped himself in bandages, and then placed a fake upper body over it all, hoping to pass through security unnoticed.
Photos shared on social media show the elaborate attempt, which ultimately failed.
Police caught the fan before he reached the stands.

Over 100 people were also detained in connection with incidents before the match, and there were also arrests after the game as fights broke out, highlighting once again the challenges of managing high-stakes derbies in Croatian football. Read more here.
