Day to Forget for Croatian Girls at Australian Open

CroatiaMonday 13 January 2014 won’t be going down as a day to remember for Croatian Women’s tennis…

Croatia’s three female hopes at the 2014 Australian Open could only manage just 6 games between them on the opening day as they all crashed out of the year’s first Grand Slam with a thump. Teenage qualifier Ana Konjuh had already exceeded expectations to qualify for her first slam at the age of just 16 and expectedly went down to the tournament’s 4th seed Li Na from China 6-2, 6-0. Meanwhile Donna Vekić was beaten 6-3, 6-1 in her first round encounter with qualifier Lucia Hradecka, and Petra Martić  was handed an embarrassing 6-0, 6-0 thrashing by Annike Beck.

The only shining light for Croatia on the opening day was Ivan Dodig, although he had to beat fellow Croatian Ivo Karlović 7-6(8), 6-3, 7-6(4) to advance through to the second round.
