ZAGREB, 1 May (Hina) – Former Croatian footballer Davor Šuker (58) has been inducted into the International Football Hall of Fame in Mexico, a museum honouring football legends, the organisers said on Wednesday.
Šuker, the top scorer at the 1998 World Cup where he won bronze with Croatia, was selected based on votes from journalists in 49 countries, including Hina.
He was among 15 nominees, alongside Thierry Henry, Alessandro Del Piero, Bebeto, Miroslav Klose, Fernando Torres and women’s footballer Homare Sawa.
The International Football Hall of Fame (El Salón de la Fama del Fútbol Internacional) is an interactive museum opened in the Mexican city of Pachuca in 2011.
It inducts new international and Mexican legends annually, with 206 members currently enshrined. Šuker, a former striker for Real Madrid, Sevilla and Arsenal, is the first Croatian footballer to be included.
He will be invited to Pachuca for a ceremony on 10 November, spokesperson Paola Herrera Rodríguez said.
The ceremony will take place in a ball-shaped building featuring photographs and profiles of former players, coaches and officials. Former Mexican midfielder and coach of Croatian origin Víctor Manuel Vucetich (70) is already among the inductees.
The Hall of Fame is run by a non-profit association.
Mexico, along with the United States and Canada, will co-host the World Cup, which begins on 11 June in Mexico City.
