Croatia will play a Davis Cup tennis tie in the eastern region of Slavonia for the first time in 20 years.

Croatia will play their World Group 1st Round tie against Spain in the city of Osijek from 3 – 5 February 2017.

“I am extremely glad to announce that the Davis Cup will again be played in Slavonia. It has been a desire of the city of Osijek to host the Croatian team for a number of years. Slavonia often misses out of a number of important sporting events and it is one of the reasons we decided to give the tie to them”, Franjo Luković, President of the Croatian Tennis Association said.

The last time Slavonia hosted a Davis Cup tie was in Osijek in 1997 when Croatia played Morocco.

The winner of the Croatia – Spain tie will meet the winner of the Serbia – Russia match in the next round.

Croatia are currently ranked 3rd in the world in Davis Cup tennis after finishing runners-up in the 2016 Davis Cup.
