Darijo Srna ends playing career and takes up coaching role

20 June 2019 – Former Croatia captain Darijo Srna has ended his playing career and will take up a coaching role.
Yesterday, Srna (37) announced his departure from Italian Serie A side Cagliari in an emotive post on social media and today the next step in his career was revealed.
Srna will return to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukraine and will be assistant coach to new manager Luis Castro, the club said on its website this morning.
“Darijo Srna returns to Shakhtar where he will join the coaching staff of Luis Castro.”

Srna has played 536 matches for the orange and blacks, and scored 49 goals, winning 26 trophies, including the UEFA Cup, 10 Ukrainian championships, 7 Cups and 8 Super Cups.
“Last season, when I was one of you, it will stay special for me. I will never forget the support and friendship which I felt,” Srna said announcing his departure from Cagliari.
Srna debuted for Croatia in 2002 and scored 22 times in his 134 games for this country. He is remembered for his trademark crosses from the right and speed.
Shakhtar will present Castro and Srna at a press conference on Friday.
